Visit the Dali17 Museum in Monterey
The Dali17 Museum in Monterey celebrates the life and works of the famous surrealist artist: Salvador Dali, also known as Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech. The Spanish artist moved to the United States with his wife during the early years of the Second World War. He sought refuge in Hotel Del Monte. Almost his entire time spent in the United States was in Monterey, celebrating various forms of art. Salvador Dali was one of the first members of Carmel Art Association. He collected vintage photographs and exhibited them periodically. He worked extensively in the years following his emigration and most of his legacy has been carefully preserved at Dali17.
About Dali17 Museum
Dali17 Museum, located at 5 Custom House Plaza, has a massive collection of art of Salvador Dali featuring more than three hundred originals. The exhibition or the collection is not only the largest on the coast but it is also unique since it includes local history, the association of the surrealist with Monterey and the people in the region. Dali17 has a permanent exhibition of original sketching, lithographs, sculptures and mixed media. These form one of the most remarkable and almost unprecedented collections of the Spaniard. The museum is so named because the artist lived on 17 Mile Drive.
Although he was more of a painter when he lived in Monterey, his love for surrealist art had not faded, as is evident from many of his later works. Dali was a celebrated artist and he had celebrity friends, including Walt Disney, Gloria Vanderbilt, Bob Hope and Andy Warhol. Through his friends and acquaintances, Dali’s inspiration seeped into filmmaking and live entertainment. Dali17 is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays through Thursdays.
